Capcom First Quarter Profits Drop 90%  from *Shacknews* Games  (29/7/2010 17:30)
Japanese developer and publisher Capcom has reported a staggering 90.4% drop in net income for its 2011 fiscal year's first quarter compared to the same period last year.

Capcom's net income between April 1 and June 30 was 213 million yen (around $2.4 million US), down roughly $23.2 million US from the previous fiscal year's first three months. The blame is pinned on factors including shrinking US and European markets, exchange rate changes, poor sales and an increase in development costs.

Generate Dependency Graph? Analyzers ? what are they?  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 8:20)

When we chatted about Visual Studio architecture tooling in Ranger chalk talk sessions today and especially when I was watching Suhail demonstrate the use of the architecture tooling, I started think about what circular references really mean. Looking at the enormous diagrams generated when analyzing the PetShop or Tailspin sample applications the actual code and the analysis results seem to get lost in all the noise.

I decided to write some simple code, defining classes in four namespaces and creating instances where a class method calls another class method, which in turn calls the original class method. Take note of ClassA2.Test() and ClassB3.Test()?

1:usingSystem;
2:usingSystem.Collections.Generic;
3:usingSystem.Linq;
4:usingSystem.Text;

6:namespaceClassLibraryDemoA

10:publicvoidTest(intiValue)

12:ClassA2 classTwo =newClassA2();
13:classTwo.Test(iValue);
14:System.Console.WriteLine(iValue);
15:}
16:}
17:
18:publicclassClassA2
19:{
20:publicvoidTest(intiValue)
21:{
22:ClassA1 classOne =newClassA1();
23:classOne.Test(iValue);
24:ClassA3 classThree =newClassA3();
25:classThree.Test(iValue);
26:ClassLibraryDemoD.ClassD1 classFour =newClassLibraryDemoD.ClassD1();
27:classFour.Test(iValue);
28:System.Console.WriteLine(iValue);
29:}
30:}
31:
32:publicclassClassA3
33:{
34:publicvoidTest(intiValue)
35:{
36:ClassLibraryDemoB.ClassB3 classThree =newClassLibraryDemoB.ClassB3();
37:classThree.Test(iValue);
38:System.Console.WriteLine(iValue);

51:System.Console.WriteLine(iValue);

54:
55:publicclassClassB2
56:{
57:publicvoidTest(intiValue)

60:classOne.Test(iValue);
61:ClassLibraryDemoA.ClassA3 classThree =newClassLibraryDemoA.ClassA3();
62:classThree.Test(iValue);

74:}
75:}

98:}

We then generate a Dependency Graph by Namespace, enabling all three currently available analyzers as shown below.

So what happens?

  1. Namespaces and associated classes that are acting as a hub? get called and call ? are shown in blue.
  2. Namespaces and associated classes that not called by anyone? are unreferenced ? are shown in violet.
  3. Namespaces and associated classes that calls others, which in turn call the classes again and thereby creating a circular reference, are highlighed in red.

When we create a sequence diagram off the ClassA2.Test() method, to get a clearer view, we suddenly realize that the circular reference is a bad one, which will result in the system eating itself up? like a recursive call that recursively calls itself. At some point the system will throw a no memory exception and implode.

Changing the code as follows, maintains a circular reference between classes, nut not a recursive call that would sooner than later result in a system blow-up.? still showing a circular reference, but not one that will implode ourselves.

2:usingSystem.Collections.Generic;

13:classTwo.TestIn(iValue);
14:System.Console.WriteLine(iValue);

Internet Explorer? 1 billion malware blocked  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 3:45)

Over at the IE8 team blog, they?ve hit amilestone? using the Smartscreen filter, they have recently blocked their 1 billionth piece of malware from being downloaded.

1 billion malware blocks is an amazing milestone and an example of two things. First socially engineered attacks like malware continue to be a real threat for users on the web. Second, to help keep you safe online your browser needs to continually enhance and improve its service. We have got better and better at blocking malware through the SmartScreen Filter because we have continued to invest in our back end service since we released IE8 in March 2009.

Smartscreen is the name of the anti-spam engine that Hotmail uses for its spam filtering, and this is a version of the filter that is shipped alongside the browser.  The technologies used to do detections of malware are similar but not quite the same since spam and malware filtering are different balls of wax.

This type of milestone is a pretty big step for Internet Explorer.  In IE6, they didn?t even have malware blocking, and IE6 is the most vulnerable browser from Microsoft at the moment (in terms of usage and attack vector space).  You might be wondering who uses IE6 and there are still a lot of people.  I went to a session at TechEd in New Orleans last month, and in one session they asked the question of which companies are still primarily using IE6.  In a room full of 500 people, roughly 3/4 of the room raised their hands.  I was really surprised by that.

Protecting people at the source from being infected is incredibly useful.  Of course, other browsers like Firefox and Chrome do the same thing.  However, I just want to point out that automated malware protection is one of the better security advances in web browsers that have appeared over the past 3 years.  The fact that this protection is free is even better.

What constitutes a spam, anyhow?  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 3:38)

Today, myself and my co-worker got into a pretty big discussion about what constitutes spam and what doesn?t.

At issue was a message that was flagged as spam when sent to an internal Microsoft alias.  What happened is a researcher sent around a message that contains  some data about spam and malware, contains some URLs along with some summaries of important trends and sends to a distribution group.  The From address is an internal Microsoft user alias but the name that appears is?Daily Trends? (not that exactly, but you get my point).  The MUA is not Outlook, but instead is a mailer script that is written in Perl.  I?m not familiar with the interface but the mailer is in the message headers and runs on a box that is internal to Microsoft.  Thus, the script, I assume, connects to port 25 (from within the Microsoft environment) and sends a mail with contents based upon what the user has written.  This mail was rejected in SMTP based upon characteristics within the mail.  I classified this as a false positive.  It?s a legitimate mail, people want it, and is neither unsolicited nor bulk.

Now, my colleague, by contrast, insists that this message is 100% spam.  It is not legitimate by any stretch of the imagination and the content filter rejected it and that this was the correct behavior.  To my (crazy) colleague, the reason that this message is spam has nothing to do with whether or not the recipients wanted to receive the message, nor whether or not the message contents are spam.  Instead, he insists that it is spam because there was no SMTP AUTH for the message.

In other words, the message was sent?anonymously.?  The script connected to the network, sent a mail, and then disconnected.  By contrast, if you are in a corporate environment, you might have to login and send mail via Exchange and all mail is sent as you; that is, mail has SMTP AUTH because you are logged in and mail is coming?from? you (never mind the fact that anyone can walk by your terminal if you haven?t locked it and send mail as you).  His argument is that a rogue employee could log in and send volumes of mail to internal distribution lists without actually doing SMTP AUTH.  And if you aren?t AUTH?ed, then the message is spam.  It doesn?t matter what the contents of the message are, no AUTH = not legitimate.  Furthermore, most (?) companies? policies (?) are that you cannot send mail anonymously like this, you must do it logged in.  If you?re not, then it doesn?t matter what type of mail you send, it should be rejected 100% of the time.

From my perspective, this is wrong.  SMTP AUTH is a way to backtrack back to the user who sent the mail and makes it easier to find out who is sending the mail.  But if it isn?t used, it doesn?t mean that it is spam.  These are the exact types of scenarios that are part of the?long tail? of email usages.  I would guess that there exists hundreds of thousands of mail and IT admins who have automated scripts set up somewhere to collect information and send out reports.  Or that send out email and don?t do SMTP AUTH.  It?s just a script, and it?s internal.  It?s a quick, easy way to find out information and send it to a narrow audience.  My point is that it isnotspam.  If a spam filterdetectsit as spam then that would be an example of a false positive.  It may be a false positive that the filter should not take action to correct (it falls into the TS category), but it?s a legitimate mail that was incorrectly flagged as spam.  Mail that one user sends to another for a specific purpose? namely, that contains valuable information ? is not spam.  Maybe best email practices aren?t being followed, but a filter should be intelligent enough to figure that out.  And not so aggressive that it cannot allow some leeway to handle cases like these.

Field Report #2: StarCraft 2 and the RTS Genre  from *Shacknews* Games  (29/7/2010 2:00)
A lot of times we play games not for preview or review, but just to have fun (Shocking, we know!). Field Report provides our first-hand experience with the latest games.

Blizzard's StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
While I am going to eventually write a full review for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, I'm not quite ready to do that. I have, however, found myself thinking a lot about the RTS genre and its evolution over the last few years. Many felt the genre had left Blizzard behind, pointing to the work doneby Relic with games like Dawn of War II as the true evolution of the genre.

The first CTP (Community Technology Preview) containing TFS-Project Server Integration is now available for download from here . It comes in a virtual machine including sample scenario data. Be aware that the CTP is mainly to validate and understand the scenarios we are planning to support with this server side integration....(read more)
Principles of software development from an alumnus of the WPF team  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 1:54)

He's recently moved to a new group, but he summarized what he's learned from his experience leading the WPF team into two blog posts. One on driving projects (Principles 1: The Essence of Driving– A Crash Course in Project Management) and one on testing (Principles 2: Principles of Software Testing).

GPGPU programming with C# and F#  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 1:54)

People often ask me about GPGPU (General Purpose GPU) programming with F#.

One project you might like to take a look at isBrahma, which lets you compile C# expression trees to the GPU. When combined with the F# Power Pack support for converting F# quotations to LINQ expression trees, this should give a viable technique for using GPUs for computation.

Another route is to useMicrosoft Accelerator, an incubation project from Microsoft Research. New functionality includes:

  • Accelerator v2 is written as a native-code C++ library with a managed API wrapper
  • Execution on multicore CPUs in addition to DX9 GPUs
  • Extensible HW target interface enabling support for execution on new devices
  • Ability to execute on multiple devices within a single Accelerator instance
  • Asynchronous evaluation of parallel arrays
  • Reusable expression graphs: Across different devices and on the same device with different leaf-node data

Some samples in F# are on the Accelerator home page, andTomas Petricekhas an excellent guide.

Cheers!

Volume Activation for Visio 2010 Explained  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 1:52)

If you?re an IT administrator managing multiple copies of Visio and Office 2010, this post explains some changes and improvements we?ve made to the deployment experience for Visio 2010. Visio 2010 deployment is a little different than Office 2010 deployment, and this article will illustrate all thosedifferences.

Volume Activation Methods

There are two supported volume activation methods for Visio and Office 2010:

  • Key Management Service (KMS). KMS uses a host computer to establish an activation service on your local company network. With a KMS host you can activate thousands of computers at the same time when they regularly connect to the company network. If you use a KMS host to activate Office 2010 or Visio 2010, you can use the same host to activate Windows.

  • Multiple Activation Key (MAK). With MAK, each computer activates Office 2010 and Visio 2010 with the Microsoft hosted activation servers over the Internet or by phone. MAK is recommended when you have fewer than 50 computers to activate, and for computers that are not regularly connected to the company network.

For more information about those activation methods,see this article on TechNet.There?s also agreat blog poston the Office Engineering blog that talks about the differences between these methods.

Visio Single Image

Visio 2010 comes in one single-image SKU. This means that the edition of Visio installed is determined by the key that is used to install it. There are three different Visio 2010 editions: Standard, Professional, and Premium. (For more info on the three editions, see this previous post).

Before you deploy Visio 2010 to your users, you need to decide which edition(s) of Visio you want to deploy.

The Visio 2010 Single Image SKU is prepopulated with a Visio Premium 2010 KMS client key.This means that if you deploy the Visio 2010 Single Image SKU without making any changes, you will be deploying Visio Premium 2010. If you want to deploy different editions, you need to take additional steps.

Benefits of Single Image Architecture

Visio 2010?s new single image architecture was designed to make it easier for organizations to manage multiple editions of Visio 2010. Some of the benefits of single image include:

  • Only one set of bits to download and mange for multiple editions
  • Ability to change editions without having to reinstall Visio
  • Support for upgrading and downgrading editions

Changing Editions of Visio

If you?re planning on deploying a different edition of Visio (other than Premium), or deploying multiple editions of Visio, you will need to install the correct product key based on the edition you want. This section is targeted towards those who are using KMS as the activation method, though you can use the same tools to install the correct MAK key. Here are some different options to help you manage this easily:

    1.Pre-deployment

    By default, the KMS client key in the Visio 2010 Single Image SKU is the Visio Premium 2010 key. You may use the?Enter another product key? under the ?Licensing and user interface? section in the Office Customization Tool (OCT) to enter the correctKMS client key:

    SKU

    Key

    Visio Premium 2010

    D9DWC-HPYVV-JGF4P-BTWQB-WX8BJ

    Visio Professional 2010

    7MCW8-VRQVK-G677T-PDJCM-Q8TCP

    Visio Standard 2010

    767HD-QGMWX-8QTDB-9G3R2-KHFGJ

    If you don?t enter the key in the OCT, then you can also enter the key in theconfig.xmlfile.

    2.Post-deployment: Use VAMT 2.0

    If you?ve already deployed and installed Visio Premium 2010 and want to change editions, it?s easy to do so, and you don?t need to reinstall Visio. Using the Volume Activation Management Tool, you can change the key for every installation of Visio client installed.

    After you change the product key for an installation of Visio 2010, you will need to restart Visio twice for the changes to take effect. From then on Visio will update and run as the edition specified by the new key.

    You can download and get moreinformation about VAMT 2.0 here.

    There?s also agreat video herethat shows how to use VAMT.

    3.Post-deployment: Ospp.vbs script

    The Office Software Protection Platform script (ospp.vbs script) enables you to configure volume editions of Office 2010 client products. With this script, you can change which keys are used for specific Visio 2010 installations. This is the command you can use to change the key:

    cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:<Visio key>

    For more information on how to use this script,see this article on TechNet.

Deploying Multiple Editions of Visio

The above section talked about how you can change the edition of Visio before installing the single image SKU, and even after you?ve already installed Visio 2010.

If you?re planning on deploying multiple editions of Visio 2010 in your organization, we recommend you do one of the following:

  1. Keep multiple copies of the Visio 2010 Single Image SKU

    Follow the steps above to customize the single image SKU for each edition of Visio 2010 you are planning on deploying, and keep them around.
  2. Use VAMT or the ospp.vbs script to monitor and change editions of Visio in your organization. VAMT and ospp.vbs make it easy to manage multiple editions of Visio, and you have the option of either a graphical interface or a command line script.

While we recognize that Visio 2010?s single image SKU requires a little bit of planning before deployment, we hope the benefits of it will save you time in the long run.

As always, let us know if you have any feedback on Visio 2010, Visio Services, or suggestions for blog posts you would like to see.

Some F# Project Templates Available Online  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 1:48)

One of the things I've been remiss in doing is advertising the existence of some key F# templates for use with Visual Studio.

First, if you have Visual Studio 2010, you can access many of these templates simply by going "New Project --> Online Templates --> ..." and looking for F# templates. You can also peruse and search the fell set of online templates onVisual Studio Gallery, and rate and comment on existing tempaltes. We're looking forward to seeing many 5-star rated F# templates there over time :-)

Here are some of the F# templates currently on Visual Studio Gallery:

F# templates are also available for F# worker roles in Windows Azure as part of theWindows Azure Tools for Visual Studio. You have to create a C# cloud application and add an F# worker role. You can find some older examples of F# worker roleshere, or just posrt some C# samples.

In addition, Daniel Mohl has developed 5 fabulous templates, he's working on getting them up on Visual Studio Gallery.

-A F# WPF MVVM Multi-Project Template

-An F# WPF MVVM Project Template

-A standard F# WCF Template

-A standard F# ASP.NET MVC 2 Template

-An F# Silverlight MVVM Multi-Project Template

If you have your own templates or projects-that-could-be-turned-into-templates, here are the steps to make and publish a template to the Visual Studio Gallery, making it really easy to access by the whole community:

  1. Download and install the Export Template Wizard
  2. Create a project that looks like the template you want to publish
  3. Select File\Export Template
  4. Upload your template tocode galleryhere.

Enjoy!

A Corporate Blog I Can Actually Appreciate: Redfin  from MSDN Blogs  (29/7/2010 1:19)

It's been a while since I have seen (or mentioned) a corporate blog I can really appreciate. Let's be real here...most corporate blogs are full of suck...excuse my language if you are so inclined. The suckage generally results from a tragic misunderstanding of two basic, foundational elements of blogs. Those are a company's understanding (or not) of why they are there and also of how they talk to people (or as I like to say: "who am I and why am I here?"...come on, who hasn't said that more than a few times? College anyone?). Or more simply put, it's a matter of having a vision and a voice. Today's message has been brought to you by the letter "v".

The world of corporate blogging is separated into 2 groups: the get-its and the get-it-nots. And let's just say that if these 2 groups participated in a tug-of war contest, the get-its would be belly first in sand. And the ones that don't get it often make the same few mistakes:

Why are they doing it?They heard blogging is cool and/or someone told them they should do it.

And how do they do it?By speaking just like their corporate website. Turn up that inner marketing copy voice, kids. It's time to start bloggin'!

Most corporate bloggers make both of these mistakes. I drink their milkshakes. Can you still call it common sense when it's in such short supply?

I have written plenty about my vision and voice. Speaking of my own voice, I am sick of the sound of it. So I won't recount my narrative on these two things. Refer to tug of war reference above. I consider one of the folks with sand in their pants. Of course. Otherwise, I never would have brought this up.

OK, a point. I have one and now I will get to it.

I have so appreciated any praise I have received for getting this blog thing right (Dear Dad, I got your email). And so I pass it along to...Glenn Kelman at Redfin. Bravo! And I say "bravo" like never. I'm just not a "bravo" kind of a gal.

You know I have had my house on the market. Did I tell you that it sold and that I bought a new condo? Perhaps the radio silence was a clue? The good news is this: I'll stop being cranky now. OK, now let's all laugh about the fact that I may never stop being cranky. Anywayz, when I started my search, I went to Redfin to view listings in the area. And by creating a login, gave them permission to send me marketing mails. What I didn't expect was that those mails would sound so...well, human.  The marketing emails I get from them are posted to their corporate blog. And they actually sound more like blog posts, from a real person, than copy. Yes the blog posts were co-opted by marketing. Imagine.

When you think about who their target audience is, it makes so much sense. I think there are 4 types of people in the market for real estate (ooh, I like to separate people into types!). Think of 2 variables, time and money. Then create a four square matrix with those variables and consider the home buyer/seller that fits into each:

People with little money and little time. Or as I like to call them, renters (and no judgment folks; I was fortunate to get into the market when I did. Let's call it home equity. Or "down payment")

People with lots of time and lots of money. To those people I have 3 words: I hate you.

People with money but no time. I would put myself into this category, only because I was fortunate enough to get into the market when I did, like I said. No merit on my part...it's just how the market played out.

People with little money, but more time. I would say that Redfin dominates this market.

Now, I should say that I didn't use Redfin (but my buyers did). I have finally grown accustomed to paying for things I could do myself but that really aren't worth it. When I try to do these things myself, I get pissy. So When it came to selling and buying, I honestly did not want to deal with the research, the appointment setting, the negotiation. Even typing those words makes my blood pressure go up. I should probably also tell you that my real estate agent is magic. His knowledge of neighborhood, agents and structures is almost frightening. And he tolerated my OCD.

Redfin didn't know I wasn't part of their target market when I joined their site. Obviously they use the tactic of harvesting the fruit and dropping the bad stuff. And I am rotten. This also allows them to capture people that may not be interested in buying their first home yet; they are just out their looking. The good news is that they will likely fall into the target mentioned above. And they have told Redfin to market to them...selves (?).

What it is likely that these people want is information. Perhaps (or even likely), they haven't done this before. So they need a little education on the market (go ahead and ask the average person what the prime lending rate is...I'll wait). And they don't want someone to treat them like they are a fool (that comes later, during the negotiation process). Now watch Glennbreak down the Case-Shiller Home-price Index. It totally makes sense and he does it like he's at happy-hour. He's their CEO and he doesn't act the least bit jerky. He's kind of charming in a geeky data kind of way.

So there it is. Best corporate blogging I have seen in a very long time. Hit those links above and givem a little interwebz juju.
